“We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”
― T.S. Eliot
I completed my MBA this May and I was honored to be chosen as a Graduate School commencement speaker. As you might imagine, I spoke of the impact that the arts have had on my education and life in general. My second bachelor degrees were in Art Studio (focusing on sculpture and printmaking) and Computer Animation & Game Development. The MBA may seem surprising, but it was a natural progression in my training. It is impossible to quantify how the training improved my interpersonal and leadership skills. I will also say that my arts background had a great impact on my business projects, not just from the ability to amp up the project design but in the way I was able to communicate ideas.
I feel lucky for the almost ten years I have had at Chico State. Many have already joked that they expect me to wind up at another school, but I think I have earned some time off to explore on my own again. I can see myself settling in a college community, but not necessarily enrolling.
With the loss of the sculpture and print shop facilities, I suppose I am the only work-in-progress at the moment. Ideally I will wind up managing larger creative projects, but I am always open to any opportunities as they present themselves.
So yeah… Time for a change.
I will continue to post new work and WIP updates as I start exploring again.
If you are from Chico and reading this, thank you all for the experience.
